Carphone Warehouse launch quite possibly the greatest phone in the world

So, you know how we’ve kinda reached a plateau with mobile phones? Surely you’ve heard people saying that new handsets don’t have the same “wow” factor that they once had?

Well there’s something new. Something that’ll replace your flashy iPhone 5s or your Samsung Galaxy S4. You’re going to want to flush those things down the toilet in a minute because this… this is going to change everything. Honestly, your iPhone is like a block of wood compared to this thing. This is the single greatest phone ever. It’ll spin the world backwards with its’ greatness …….. and it costs a mere 50 quid.

It is…. THE BRICK. Da-da-DAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Designed by Binatone, when it rings you can hear the 1980's calling (joking), because it’s an 80's style mobile phone. Not only that, but it includes that retro mobile game – Snake!

You can use it two different ways, either by connecting it to your existing mobile phone via Bluetooth or you can whack a SIM card in a use it as your main phone. Oh yeah! 2G action, all the way and it’s got a torch too. This. Just. Rocks.

It doesn’t weigh anywhere near as much as those original handsets, it’s just 206 grams and even has a microSD card slot so that you can pipe out some tunes via the speaker. The best bit? The battery lasts for ONE WHOLE MONTH!!

This, my friends, is innovation. If we can’t go any further forwards, let’s go back. It’s got an aerial… an actual aerial. None of this retractable rubbish – that daft 90's tech has no place in these parts. An aerial… an actual aerial. It’s all bringing a tear to my eye, it really is. Oh… I can’t cope… Here, have some pictures….

Get yourself down to Carphone Warehouse to bag one exclusively (for the next two weeks, then it’s available elsewhere). Get one, take it home, then put one of those VHS tapes into the video recorder, rewind the tape, then submerge yourself in the 80's…

THE BRICK NOW AT CARPHONE WAREHOUSE

It’s big, it’s bulky and its battery lasts for a month

LONDON, 24 th October 2013 – The Brick, a 80s style retro mobile phone designed by Binatone, is available from today exclusively at Carphone Warehouse*, in selected stores and online at www.carphonewarehouse.com.

Available for £50, The Brick can be connected to your smartphone via Bluetooth and used as a funky accessory to make and receive calls and text messages, even when your smartphone is tucked snugly away in your bag. Or, simply insert a SIM card and use your big and bulky Brick as a 80s throwback alternative to your modern handset.

The Brick may be retro in appearance but does offer several upgrades on the original 80s mobile phone, including 2G, a built in LED torch and colour screen. It can also be used as a loudspeaker with a Micro SD slot for your music collection, perfect for pumping out those old-school favourite tunes. The Brick is surprisingly lighter than its older counterparts, coming in at 206 grams.

However, perhaps the number one reason to go out and get yourself a Brick is that it comes equipped with everyone’s original (and favourite) mobile game – Snake –giving you a chance to recapture your lost and carefree youth by brightening up a dull morning commute to work.

With a standby battery life of up to one month, ‘The Brick’ will keep going as long as you do.

The Brick is available exclusively* in selected Carphone Warehouse stores and online at www.carphonewarehouse.com for £50.

* The Brick will be exclusive to Carphone Warehouse for the first two weeks of sale

LG Fireweb announced to the (developing) world.

The LG Fireweb has been unveiled online but woahaaa, slow down there cowboy, because this isn’t an Android handset, it’s powered by Firefox OS 1.1.

Mozilla have only just released the new version of their OS (which we saw in version 1.0 back in February) and, according to the press announcement, it comes equipped with a 1GHz CPU, 3G, a 4? HVGA TFT touch screen and 2 GB memory. It also has a 5 megapixel camera.

Telefónica will be launching this device through Vivo in Brazil for 309 Brazilian Reals, which works out at about £87. The Alcatel Onetouch Fire will also be available on Vivo.

If you’ve never heard of the Firefox OS and want to know more about it, have a look at our full hands-on from earlier this year.

So, if you’re after low-powered-but-lightweight-OS aimed at emerging markets, go find yourself a Brazilian.

Vivo begins sales of LG Fireweb and Alcatel Onetouch Fire

Firefox OS allows consumers to have the first smartphone with an open system for developing applications and at a very compelling price point Telefónica also will launch Firefox OS in Peru, Uruguay and Mexico

22 October 2013, Rio de Janeiro – Telefônica Vivo today announces the launch of Firefox OS in Brazil with the LG Fireweb and Alcatel Onetouch Fire devices. Already available in Spain, Colombia and Venezuela, the operating system is the result of two years of development of Telefónica Digital together with Mozilla. Besides Brazil, three other Latin American countries will launch devices with Firefox OS in the coming days: Peru, Uruguay and Mexico.

The launch of Firefox OS in Brazil is a milestone for the country’s mobile industry, increasing the number of design options for intelligent devices (smartphones) and operating systems at affordable prices, based on open standards. Today’s launch also marks the world’s first launch of a LG Firefox OS device.

Truly open systems such as Firefox OS free consumers and developers from the limitations of existing ecosystems through the use of the web as an access platform to all features and applications. Its design and construction with open source also allows a constant and rapid evolution of the system through collaborative work with Mozilla.

According to the president of Telefônica Vivo, Antonio Carlos Valente, Firefox OS represents a relevant option to the smartphone market, currently dominated by operating systems controlled by large international companies. “We intend to offer a totally new experience to the customer at affordable prices and where the features and the evolution of the system will be defined by the immense Firefox OS developer community and not for any particular company”, says the executive.

Jay Sullivan, COO of Mozilla, states, “We built Firefox OS as part of Mozilla’s mission to put the power of the Web in people’s hands and offer the best Web experience possible. We’re happy to see Firefox OS gain momentum with partners launching new devices in new markets and developers around the world being inspired to innovate. Our partnership with Telefónica Vivo demonstrates the rich, new experiences offered on Firefox OS by combining the best global and local content with LG’s elegant new device experience.”

National Ecosystem

The system provides the customer with everything he/she needs for a smart telephone plus a revolutionary search capability that finds applications and internet services related to the research topic, far beyond the pure content located by traditional search engines. Firefox OS brings a simple and intuitive interface, including an expense-control app and integrated social network. The system is also “lighter” than the current ones, which allows it to run on simpler hardware.

The customer can benefit from easy access to local and global applications in Firefox Marketplace. Among the global content companies that support Firefox OS are eBay, Wikipedia, The Weather Channel, TIME, Fox Sports, AOL, CNN Money, Huffington Post, Badoo, Kayak, TMZ, SoundCloud and Tuenti.

In Brazil, the Firefox Marketplace already has more than 50 national apps from different categories developed for the platform. Among the national apps are UOL, Itau, Climatempo, IG, OLX, Decolar, Guias Mais, BOL, SporTV, Dieta e Saúde, Editora Globo, Galinha Pintadinha, Kekanto, Vivo my App and Vivo Chat. This is a result of the work done by the Innovation Center of Telefônica for a year-and-a-half in order to encourage the development of the Firefox OS ecosystem in the country. Throughout this period, the Center held hackathons, attended lectures and seminars on Firefox OS and promoted events with a community of over 1400 developers.

The two cellphone models are already on sale and offer all the capabilities of a smartphone, including messaging, email, calendar, FM radio, camera with built-in filters, location services based on HERE maps and browsing through the Firefox Web browser.

LG Fireweb has a HVGA TFT touch screen of 4 inches and has a 3G Qualcomm processor with 1GHz and 2 GB memory. It also has a 5 megapixel camera.

Alcatel Onetouch Fire has a 3.5 inch display, 3.2 megapixel camera, 3G Qualcomm processor with 1GHz and 2 GB memory card.

Considering its features and price, Firefox OS offers a great value package for customers looking for their first smartphone.

Comprehensive Campaign

With the concept “You change, so does it” the campaign to publicize the operating system was developed by DM9DDB and will run across cinema, open TV, online media, merchandising, and retail, in addition to own brand channels. The creative line explores the concept of intelligent searching, showcasing the dynamism in the user experience and delivering content the customer is interested in.

In order to complement these initiatives, a microsite was also created with specific information about the operating system, explanatory tutorials and online sales of smartphones. You can find that here: www.vivo.com.br/firefoxos.

Other special features of this launch is the film soundtrack, bought exclusively for the campaign and the production direction, signed by James Gooding, responsible for award-winning films.

Angry Birds goes free on Windows Phone

image
Nearly all the Angry Birds apps (apart from Angry Birds Space and Angry Birds Seasons) are now showing as free on the Windows Phone store.

You can now get Angry Birds Star Wars and Angry Birds Star Wars II (although both are confusingly listed as just “Angry Birds Star Wars” and, for some reason, they’re in a category called “puzzle + trivia”)..

Head over to the Rovio page for all the details. We don’t know currently if this is a temporary price drop, so get them while they’re free.

Nexus 5 Cases available for pre-order

The rumour mill is working overtime around the whole Nexus 5 launch.

With a Google event taking place today in New York, speculation is rife that the launch is imminent and adding fuel to the fire is the fact that not only are there devices up for sale on eBay but also the fact that cases are now up for pre-order.

The cases are available from accessories retailer Mobile Fun and come in a variety of guises.

The availability of said cases surely points to a launch that will happen sooner rather than later, however the big question still remains when?

You can check out the full range of cases available for pre order here.

The O2 dog goes barking mad… for 4G

dog-o2
As you know, I’m a professional and well regarded blogger / reporter. The people from The Telegraph come to me when they want advice on how to cover the news y’know.

However, I do also love things that are a bit bonkers and “out there”. This then, is why I like the new O2 4G advert. If you live in Glasgow, London, Leeds, Bradford, Birmingham, Coventry, Leicester, Liverpool, Sheffield or Nottingham then yes – you can get that 4G power from O2. The latest advert promotes the new super-fast network and it’s.. just… nuts… I think they’re trying to get around the fact that no-one is really sure if they actually need 4G. If you throw some insanity in their face, they’re gonna want some of whatever is being sold. It left me wanting dog biscuits. Not for a dog. For me. I want to eat dog biscuits. That’s weird.

By the way, that tune in the background is Donna Summer with “I Feel Love”. That’s from 1977 people. 1977. Way, way ahead of its’ time. If you want the full thing, here’s the ever-so-slightly-tweaked Danny Howells Mix, which is just brilliant..

See? Slick and professional, that’s me. Now, where’s those dog biscuits?

40 Million people have it, many more want it

image

40 Million. That’s a big number. It’s pretty much the population of Argentina. Imagine, if you will, 40 million people. Got that?

Now imagine them holding something. Something plastic. It’s a Galaxy S4.

Samsung have, according to inews24, offloaded this many in just 6 months. We’ve just done some (very) rough calculations and that works out at around 9,200 every hour, or 154 a minute… or two and a half every second.

The S4 sold 10 million in the first month alone and is obviously still doing great things for the company. If you want to be number 40,000,001, have a read of our Samsung Galaxy S4 review.

Want to wireslessly charge your wireless charger? Err.. you can.

image

A bit confusing this one, but stick with me. Made by Nokia, the DC-50 isn’t a Dyson, but a portable wireless battery pack. Like other battery packs, you charge it up and then, when your phone is running low on go-go-juice, you connect it up anywhere for a power boost.

However, this one is a bit different. Firstly, it’s a wireless charger, so if you have a Lumia 1520 or another wireless-charge-compatible handset, you can just pop your phone on for instant power.

This wireless battery pack charges itself on one of the current wireless charge plates. So, if you want a mobile charging solution and less wires to trip over, get one of these. Oh, and don’t worry if your phone doesn’t have the wireless charging facility, you can use a cable as backup.

Hang on…. Why not buy two or three? Then you could wirelessly charge your wireless charger, which would in turn wirelessly charge another charger, which would charge your phone :)

Are you happy? There’s an app for that!

Do you often wonder whether you are truly happy? Well now you can get an app to help you find out…..
image
Yes an app will help you work out if you’re happy. Unfortunately it’s an iPhone exclusive for now, so I’m going to have to wait a while before I can find out.

The app was developed by the Lemon Labs Company and scans a person’s face to determine the user’s mood. In addition to the usual method of use, when a person rates his happiness level on a scale from one to ten, the app user will be able to determine their own or their friends’ happiness level just by taking photos of their own or their friends’ faces.

The app seems to want to create a worldwide city happiness League.

The residents of 123 cities around the world can already capture their moods. The users can see the world’s top five positive cities and the world’s top five negative ones, and they can share their results in social networks. A Happy Barometer app for mobile devices using the Android platform will appear in the near future.

If you’re intrigued by the whole happiness thing, head over to the link below. It’s free also.

Think about this though. It’s an app that, if you smile, tells you that you’re happy. I think it’s made by ShockinglyObvious Ltd.

Mobile coverage spotty on your drive to work? You’re not the only one

Every year Ofcom produce an infrastructure report which details the state of our broadband and mobile infrastructure here in the UK.

It’s the first time that the regulator has looked at the mobile coverage provided on UK roads. Motorways appear to have fairly decent coverage, so you can browse at 90mph or keep in touch via WhatsApp…

“Yeah, I’ll be home in a bit. Woaha!! Where did that truck come from?”

However, head onto a A or B road and your satnav or email might slow up somewhat. Only 35% of these roads get coverage from alll four mobile networks, with 9% having no 3G whatsoever.

image

If you travel to work on a train then, unless there’s a booster strapped to your carriage, you’ll be aware of the hilariously bad coverage on the railways. Ofcom has started to investigate this and will be giving their results out next year.

The full report, which is really rather chunky, is available to download here (PDF) but it certainly backs up some of my experiences, although I must state that there’s several areas on my car-share up the M6 this morning where O2 dropped to GPRS. Methinks that Ofcom are relying on those hit-n-miss network coverage maps a little too much.

Sony shares PlayStation 4 launch features, announces day-one patch

With just a few weeks left until the release of the PlayStation 4, Sony has sent out a press release detailing the features that will be available on the console at launch. Many of the features were announced months ago along with the original reveal, but there are some noteworthy additions — as well as some omissions — on the list.

The features listed include Remote Play on the PlayStation Vita, second screen support for smartphones and tablets, gameplay photo and video capture, live broadcast of play sessions on Ustream and Twitch, the ability to play while you download, and many others. Interestingly, Sony has included a note in the press release that warns users they will not be able to watch Blu-Ray Discs or DVDs until an update has been applied.

It is also worth noting that the PlayStation 4 will require a system update as soon as you take it out of the box. Sony has not clarified exactly what Update 1.50 is, but the release claims that “[b]y updating to the latest system software version, users will be able to enjoy a variety of exciting features from the day of launch.”

Sony’s press release follows below.

Sony Computer Entertainment Announces A Variety Of Features Available On PlayStation®4(PS4™) System At Launch

System software update version 1.50 to be released along with the PlayStation®4 system’s North American launch; features include remote play with the PlayStation®Vita system, and game play sharing via the “SHARE” button that enhance game play experience

TOKYO, Oct. 25, 2013 /PRNewswire/ — Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) announced that it will release system software update version 1.50*1 for PlayStation®4 (PS4™) system simultaneously with the official North American launch of the system on November 15, 2013. By updating to the latest system software version, users will be able to enjoy a variety of exciting features from the day of launch.

The PS4 system was designed from the ground up to ensure that the very best games and most immersive experiences reach PlayStation users. It redefines rich and riveting gameplay with powerful graphics and speed, deeply integrated social capabilities, and innovative second-screen features utilizing devices such as the PlayStation®Vita (PS Vita) system. SCE will continue to enhance the PS4 system through future system software updates.

The following features are available on PS4 at North American launch:

Remote Play

Users will be able to access PS4 titles displayed on their living room TVs and play them on a PS Vita system over Wi-Fi networks by using PS4 Link*2*3. SCE anticipates that most PS4 titles will be playable on the PS Vita system through Remote Play*4.

Second Screen

Users can use the PS4 Link*2 application for the PS Vita system, and PlayStation®App for iPhone, iPad, and Android™ based smartphones and tablets*5, to use these devices as second screens in supported titles. PlayStation®App has the ability to enable users to interact with games with their mobiles devices. For example on THE PLAYROOM, a title pre-installed in all PS4 systems that requires PlayStation®Camera, users can draw pictures on their mobile device screens and flick them towards the TV. The images then appear as a 3D object within the game.

Record, take screen shots, and upload gameplay effortlessly

The PS4 system provides dedicated, “always on” video encoding systems that enables seamless uploading of gameplay. Users can share their epic triumphs by simply hitting the “SHARE button” on PS4 Wireless Controller (DUALSHOCK®4), take screenshots or scan through the last 15 minutes of gameplay, tag it and return to the game-the video uploads as the user plays. At the PS4 system’s launch in North America, users will be able to share their images and videos with friends on Facebook and screenshots with followers on Twitter*6.

Broadcast and spectate gameplay

The PS4 system also enhances social spectating by enabling users to broadcast their gameplay in real-time to game fans around the globe, using Ustream and Twitch*7 live internet streaming services. SCE provides two ways for users to view live broadcasts. First, the Live from PlayStation® application on PS4 aggregates streams from all PlayStation® users. Second, users can spectate friends’ PS4 gameplay from PCs, and applications such as Ustream, Twitch, and browsers, which are installed on their mobile devices. These applications can be easily started up via PlayStation®App, and users can also use these applications to post comments to gameplay broadcasts. Furthermore, users with PlayStation®Camera can stream camera images and microphone sounds along with their live gameplay broadcast.

Play as you download

This feature enables users to play supported digital titles as they are being downloaded*8. When a game is purchased, users can start playing after PS4 downloads a portion of the data, while the rest of the game is downloaded in the background during actual gameplay. Games may be downloaded in stand-by mode.

Multi log-in

A maximum of 4 users can log-in to a single PS4 system simultaneously. These players can use their own save data to play games, and also earn trophies on their own Sony Entertainment Network accounts even when playing a multi-player game together on a single PS4 system*9.

Party (Voice chat)

By using the Mono Headset bundled with the PS4 system, users will be able to chat with up to eight friends enjoying different applications or games. Furthermore, users can use Party to chat between PS4 and PS Vita systems.

Face recognition and voice commands*10

Users with PlayStation®Camera will be able to register their facial image onto their PS4 system, and login to their system using facial recognition instead of DUALSHOCK®4. Furthermore, users can use either the microphone of the Mono Head set connected to DUALSHOCK®4, or PlayStation®Camera to navigate through the PS4 home screen (PlayStation®Dynamic Menu) with voice commands to start up games and shutdown the system, among other features*11.

Background music player

Users can enjoy gameplay while listening to music in the background with Music Unlimited, a cloud-based digital music service*12. Users can also voice chat with friends while listening to music.

Online Multiplayer

PlayStation®Plus (PS Plus) members will be able to play PS4 titles online with other players via the network. PS Plus makes it easy for members to join available online multiplayer matches in a variety of ways, including the ability to easily join a game from a live stream broadcast or Party voice chats.

Blu-ray Disc™ and DVD player

Users can enjoy not only gaming on their PS4 system, but also Blu-ray and DVD video contents*13.

Furthermore, some features will not be available at launch, such as “suspend/resume mode” which is a feature that keeps the PS4 system in a low power state and promptly takes users back to their game. SCE will provide additional information about system software update version 1.50 and features available at the PS4 system’s North America launch, and features that will be available after launch, in the near future.

SCE will continuously enrich services and features of the PS4 system, while striving to further expand the PlayStation platform.

Show me yours and I’ll show you mine. It’s 27 feet wide

Y’know, some people think I’m bonkers, but I just think I’m free. I’m just living my life, there’s nothing crazy about me.

Now I’ve given you a personal insight into my life, come and have a look at my 27 foot-wide Windows Tablet.

I wake up everyday, it’s a daydream. Everything in my life isn’t what it seems, but this actually is. Dizzee Rascal, who’s real name is actually Dylan, seems to have gone a bit bonkers (geddit) on the specs with his new tablet, and has took to the stage to show off the new Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 from Microsoft.

Dizzee Rascal, who didn’t use the word “like” or “innit” once during his photoshoot, stated..

Tsk, and there was me thinking that he only cared about sex and violence. Apparenly a heavy bass line is his kind of silence.

The Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2, or possibly the 2 Pro (it’s a little unclear in places) are on sale at your local electrical store this Christmas. Buy one for yourself or, as a present idea, go buy one for a friend or relative. I’d keep the receipt if I were you though, as they’ll probably want to take it back and get an iPad.

DIZZEE RASCAL REVEALS SUPER SIZED SURFACE IN THE HEART OF LONDON

TO LAUNCH MICROSOFT’S SURFACE 2 AND SURFACE 2 PRO

LONDON: Multi award-winning music artist Dizzee Rascal has collaborated with Microsoft to launch the latest tablet, by revealing a super-sized Surface 2 tablet in the heart of the capital.

Brit rapper Dizzee was today dwarfed by the giant Surface 2, which loomed over the acclaimed artist at 27 feet wide and 17 feet high. Though towering above him, it seemed nothing could intimidate Dizzee as the energetic Rascal hopped from key to key putting the new device to the test.

The event marks the launch of the Surface 2 and Surface Pro tablets which makes it easier to do more and get closer to the things that matter most.

Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 both benefit significant updates, including improvements to processing power and battery life, display and camera resolution, and the kickstand —now featuring a second, wider angle, making it more comfortable for lap and desk use.

Dizzee Rascal said: “I’m never in one place for long – whether it’s in the studio, on tour, I’m always travelling about and now I can combine work and play on one device – works for me!”

Ally Wickham, Microsoft Surface UK Lead, said: “We’re really excited to be collaborating with Dizzee Rascal on the Surface 2 launch; he is a real inspiration for what can be achieved when you go out there and get more done! The Surface 2 is designed to work with you to achieve, connect and compile your personal and work worlds.”

Dizzee will be performing a secret, money-can’t-buy gig in central London (not at Trafalgar Square) tonight. Fans of the Bonkers star can win tickets to attend Dizzee’s exclusive performance by Tweeting #giantsurface.

The Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 tablets are on sale now at John Lewis, Currys, PC World, Argos and GAME as well as www.microsoft.com. More information on Surface is available at http://www.Surface.com.

Thoughts on the iPad event – Opinion

overview_heroApple announced a plethora of new software and hardware at its event on Tuesday. While we don’t really cover laptops and desktops, there still plenty of mobile goodies to discuss.

iPad Air

As a massive iPad fan, I was particularly looking forward to seeing what the iPad 5 would look like. While I love my iPad 2, it’s starting to show its age and the once fantastic screen now frankly looks mediocre. iOS 7 has exacerbated the problem, being designed for a fully retina world with its light fonts and minimalist aesthetic.

I’m not really a fan of the Mini. As a reading device its size is a boon, but I actually do a lot of typing on my iPad and find that the full size screen lets me touch type with near perfect accuracy. It’s not as good a physical keyboard, but it’s good enough that I haven’t needed to use a laptop for the past two years when writing emails or notes.

Still, I take my iPad virtually everywhere and this was making the Mini much more tempting. While I haven’t tried out the Air yet, it looks like I may very well be sticking to a full size iPad. It’s dramatically thinner, lighter and smaller. It’s incredible that Apple have managed to slim down the bezels, reduce the weight and thickness and yet massively increase power and maintain the amazing battery life. It’s a complete win in every way.

Android tablets like the Nexus 10 may have even higher res screens and cost less, but sometimes you really do get what you pay for. When it comes to full size tablets, there’s only one game in town. And it just leapt even further ahead.

Retina iPad Mini

Size aside, I was never a fan of the original Mini because of its iPad 2 based hardware. My iPad 2 may have served me like a champ, but it’s definitely getting on. I have no problem with Apple’s higher pricing, but when I pay a premium I want to get the best and I want something that will last a while.

With the Retina iPad Mini I feel like I’m definitely getting both. I thought we’d be getting an A6X, but Apple went all out and gave it an A7 to make it spec for spec identical to the Air. And for a full $100 less. The only problem now is choosing how much that extra 1.8” is worth to you, either in price or portability.

I still feel like smaller tablets are more for content consumption though. While the Mini will give you all the same great iPad apps, I’m not sure if I’d enjoy using it as much for things like typing and photo editing that I do regularly on my iPad 2. For others it may very well be the perfect tablet, and for $100 less I may be one of them.

 iPad 2

The fact that the iPad 2 is still on sale must presumably means that it’s still doing decent business for Apple. I can’t remember having another gadget for as long as my iPad 2. It’s done me proud over the last two and a half years. In the same time, I’ve been through four different phones.

But I’d feel sorry for anyone that buys one today for $399. The fact that Apple can still sell it for $399 makes feel both annoyed and amazed. I feel like the Air is incredible value at $499. But you’d have to really value that $100 saving to go for the cheaper model. Even then, you could have a far superior Retina iPad Mini for the same price. Please just don’t do it.

 iPad Mini

I feel similarly about the original iPad Mini. I was never a big fan in the first place, but a year later and for a whole $30 less I still couldn’t recommend it to anyone. I’d rather have the a Nexus 7 with its far superior screen and $80 saving. It might not have all the apps, but phone apps work pretty great on it. And at that size it’s more about reading and video, for which the widescreen actually has an advantage.

 Overall

Two frankly awesome and great value high end models. Two ageing and overpriced low end models. Do yourself a favour and spend the extra cash for the flagships.

Images of the Nokia 1320 Batman phablet appear online

1320-front

All the surprises are being taken away from Nokia fans ahead of tomorrows big device announcement event, it seems, because leaky old Twitterer @evleaks has gone and dropped a couple of images of the new 1320 phablet (previously known as ‘Batman’).

1320-back

Whilst we really don’t know exactly where the 1320 will stand in the Nokia lineup, the word on the Finnish streets is that it’ll be a ‘budget’ phablet, probably around the 6-inch mark with a 5MP shooter. In fact, it looks like it could be an overgrown 625 taking advantage of the latest version of Windows Phone’s ability to have 6 live tiles in a row. Unfortunately, it’s almost certainly not going to take advantage of the full HD capability of Windows Phone, so the resolution won’t be great.

Other Finnish streets have words on them to the effect that the 1320 is going to come with the new Nokia Camera app, combining both Smart Cam and Pro Cam.

A cut-down spec in a phablet form-factor is a risky move. It’s something Samsung tried with the Galaxy Mega, which met with very little praise.

We’ll find out more tomorrow when the official Nokia World event finally kicks off, but in the mean time: are you a Windows Phone fan aching for a phablet but without the financial pain associated with them? Could this be your next device?

Next Stop…Who Knows!

The world of smartphones never ceases to evolve, even if the pace of the innovations may have slowed a little. The big question is where next for smartphones?

We have pretty much established who the key players are in the marketplace and although we do have choices of systems & handsets it’s quite safe to say that Android & IOS lead the way with a significant market presence.

Today, I sat thinking to myself what would I personally love to see from a smartphone in the future. I’m not too bothered about the novelty features phones offer like Samsung’s “Smart Stay” and “Smart Scroll”, I want something that is really going to captivate me, something that I would use time after time.

Then it dawned on me, it’s not anything new as such, but I’m sure it would be something many users would definitely find useful. I was browsing a website on my HTC One and came to a page where I had to fill in an application form which had a specification sheet I had to refer to. This would have been quite difficult to do on my HTC One and I thought wouldn’t it be pretty cool if there was a way to “dock” my smartphone and turn it into a Laptop.

Imagine docking your phone and continuing where you left off and maybe using the phone as a second screen. In my case filling in the application online while using the smartphone as a second screen to refer to the specification sheet, how about docking your phone and browsing the internet while using your handset to play and control music. Surely I am not alone in seeing how useful this could be?

As I say, it’s not a brand new concept, Asus have a similar sort of thing minus the second screen concept with the Padfone Infinity series and Ubuntu have this exact concept integrated into their emerging smartphone operating system, but surely this is an avenue Apple & Google should be exploring?

The slowing sales of laptops and desktop PC’s is apparent but surely there is a strong opportunity to branch out and bridge the gap between the smartphone and the desktop PC and Laptop.

But I can dream, and for now I will have to stick to the skipping between my phone and a laptop. But who knows maybe a Google or Apple Exec will be reading this and run back to the Android and IOS wizards and we will see the fruition of something exciting!

What would our readers like to see in the continuing evolution of the smartphone?

Our Saturday Omnibus

gps-tracker1

Hello weekend people. I’ve been told this morning that a couple of videos I uploaded this week were a little corrupted.

I’ve now re-uploaded them, and I firmly blame a combination of bad weather, a droppy WiFi connection and wholesale gas prices.

First, our look at some of the security concerns you should consider when using GPS sports trackers. Many bikes have been stolen in our local area – proper posh ones too – and I reckon that this is how thieves are getting their hands on them…

Next up, an app to keep an eye on your smartphone – monitoring your apps and tracking what they do. Malwarebytes Mobile Security App..

Nokia Guru image leaks out

The Nokia Guru is apparently an MP3 player made by Nokia and no doubt deeply tied into the Nokia Music and Xbox Music services. Regular source of leaks @evleaks has posted an image of the Guru, which I guess will be announced at Nokia World in Abu Dhabi tomorrow.

It looks great, but quite how it will tie into the Nokia and Microsoft services remains to be seen. We shall probably see tomorrow.
