Xperia Z1f announced in a variety of bold colors

As it’s nearing “that” time of year we’re beginning to see additional handsets appearing and launching around the world. NTT DoCoMo have wedged an additional 16 handsets into their range and one of them is this, the shrunk-down Xperia Z1.

Named the Xperia Z1f, the 5? Z1 screen is now 4.3?, but the rest of the specs stay pretty similar. It’s powered by a 2.2GHz MSM8974 quad-core Snapdragon 800 CPU and has a 20.7-megapixel “G Lens” camera. We presume that’s something to do with G-Unit or 50 Cent. Who knows.

Other specs include 2GB of RAM, 16GB of built-in storage, Qi wireless charging NFC and 2300mAh battery. It’ll be available in lime, black, white and pink, but don’t expect to see it in Europe or elsewhere just yet. This is Japan only and won’t arrive until December.

Muvit Stick N Stand Case for Xperia Z Ultra

The Xperia Z Ultra is a great bit of kit but with the giant screen I am worried that I will break all that lovely glass in my bag or pocket (yes you can put this beast in a pocket). So the first thing I did after getting hold of this beauty was to start hunting for a case. Once again the good boys and girls at Mobilefun were able to help me out.

Here we have the Muvit Stick N Stand and when I first saw this I have to say I was intrigued from the get go. I do not like thick cases and I am also not a huge fan of the book style cases that have become popular due to the brilliant flip cover from Samsung. They both add bulk and are awkward to use.

I was hoping that the Muvit case did not have these issues. I can happily report that my needs have been fulfilled.

The case is made out of a leather like material and is incredible thin. Unlike the previous Muvit case I reviewed for the Xperia Z, this one does not have the added bulk brought from having credit card slots.

The case also attaches to the device differently instead of using a cumbersome bracket, here we rely on a sticky stop on the far right hand side of the case. The reason it does not cover the whole back will be shown later on. The glue used in the sticky pad is good as I have had no issue with the device moving while it is in place.

To keep the case closed or compact when open there are magnets built into the front right hand side and also flap with a magnet in it. This system works well and keeps the case closed well in normal circumstances.

I have been using the case for nearly 2 weeks and I have had no issue with the clasp opening. Another aspect of the case is that you can prop up the phone in a viewing style to allow you use it for viewing videos etc. This works brilliantly on airline tray tables and also on trains.

However one major negative is that the charging port is not accessible in this configuration. Another annoyance could be if you were to using Sony’s Magnetic charger as this would mean that the cover would have to be placed in the propped open position for a prolonged period of time.

Overall I have found the case  useful and simple to use. It is also good at what a case should be and that is protecting the device. Now I don’t mean protecting it from being dropped but not many cases will do that and still be this svelte.

I am very happy with the Muvit Stick N Stand case as will be using it for a long time coming. At the price of £24.99 it cannot really be argued with as well as it really is great value.

If you are going to be getting an Xperia Z Ultra or anything of this size then it is well worth checking out the Muvit range from Mobilefun as I have been consistently impressed.

Sony Xperia Z1 with DSC-QX10 Smart Shot first look

IMG20130907110049298

I’ve finally got my grubby mits on Sony’s newest releases, so I thought I’d share my pleasures (and pains) with you lovely people.

Sony pre-release review models are notoriously hard to come by, especially when you want them with some accessories, but with a little sweet talking I was able to get my hands on a demo model of an Xperia Z1 and a DSC-QX10 Smart Shot detachable camera lens straight out of the box at my local O2 store. Mainly because the staff were as excited as me to play with them!

Firstly, sorry that the photos are a little shaky, you see we drew quite a crowd and elbows started becoming pointy!

IMG20130907110012192

There are two big questions about these devices: is the screen on the Z1 up to scratch after the disappointment of the OG Z, and how well does the Smart Shot work in conjunction with the phone.

Let’s tackle the screen first

It’s a really great screen. Sony have put the time and effort into it, and I put it amongst the best on the market. However, it’s not quite there still.

I would be over the moon with it had I not I put my OPPO Find 5 next to it. The viewing angles aren’t quite as good as the OPPO (although far better than the Z), and for ultimate crispness the Sony just loses out.

WP_20130907_002

Considering that I rate the OPPO Find 5's screen as the best I’ve ever used, I was setting the bar high. The Sony will, however, give the Samsung Galaxy S4 a run for its money, with only the extreme viewing angles letting it down.

The Smart Shot

The DSC-QX10 seems just as ridiculous in the flesh as in the promo videos. It took a couple of minutes to work out how to clip it on properly and another couple to pair it at first, but once powered up it look the part.

IMG20130907105610685

IMG20130907105637617

Although the devices are front heavy when clipped together the combination isn’t uncomfortable to use. The software and placement of the buttons makes things quite intuitive.

The fact that the DSC-QX10 has a tripod mount on it means that this could be used as a seriously good camera in a lot of situations.

IMG20130907110126120

After having seen the cheesy video leaked just before IFA I was curious to see how the Smart Shot performs when it’s not clipped to the phone. With the duo wirelessly paired I held the Z1 and the store manager walked to the door of the shop with the lens (about 15 feet). The picture was crystal clear with no noise. He then went out onto the pavement – still the same – and into the market stall another 15 feet away – still fine. In fact, he went about 40 feet until it started breaking up.

I was unable to view the resultant photos on a computer monitor, but they looked pretty decent on the Z1's screen.

I was impressed. This means that the Smart Shot could be set up and left somewhere and remote photography with decent optical zoom becomes a breeze. This isn’t the most widespread of uses, but for wildlife photography where one doesn’t want to startle the animals this could actually be useful!

Apart from that though, I can’t see any advantages of this hybrid device pairing over a separate phone and decent compact camera. Moreover, I see no point whatsoever is getting the QX10's bigger brother (the QX100); it will just be heavier and and leave a bigger hole in the bank account.

IMG20130907110437848

This is a wonderful gadget that’s great to play with that, unfortunately, will probably end up unused in a drawer somewhere.

First look conclusions

Wow!

Both of these products are incredibly well made and show the build quality and class that are traditionally reserved for Apple products. Despite the slightly inferior screen on the Z1 and the quirkiness of the DSC-QX10 I can see me giving both of them a home.

Sony Xperia Z1 photos leaked. The clearest so far

There’s been so much said about the Sony Xperia Z1 (once known as the Honami), and we’ve also seen some blurry-cam photos, but some really clear shots have turned up on a Chinese site going by the name of 365dian.com that’s got a good reputation when it comes to Sony leaks.

A couple of interesting points are the little connector that looks like it’s going to be for some kind of docking accessory, and the fact that the code number on the screen kinda looks like the name Leigh when squinting from 30ft after a gin or two. Which is good enough for me to say that these photos are dedicated to our illustrious leader!

I’ll shut up and let you look at the pictures now.
