Spotify reportedly adding free, ad-supported listening to mobile apps

According to the Wall Street Journal Spotify is planning free, ad-supported listening for its iOS and Android apps.

In the past, Spotify has limited mobile listening to “Premium” paying members. Free, ad-supported listening was only available on desktop and laptop computers.

With the policy change, non-paying listeners will soon get a limited number of songs with ads in between, the report says. Spotify has inked a deal regarding rates to play songs with Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group, and Warner Music Group.

Thursday’s news from Spotify comes at a time when iTunes Radio and Rdio have been making a foray into the music streaming scene, so extending free listening to mobile could be seen as a way for Spotify to grow its user base. How Spotify treats free listeners will be similar to Pandora’s tactics of offering limited skips and streaming.

Spotify announced in July more than 20 per cent of the people who use the service regularly end up buying subscriptions.

Spotify declined to comment on the rumour.

Facebook reportedly puts off adding video ads until next year

Good news for everyone who’s been dreading having video ads play when you log into Facebook: It seems Mark Zuckerberg and friends have decided to delay the debut of Facebook video ads until at least 2014. Unnamed sources tell AllThingsD that Facebook has told advertising partners that they shouldn’t expect any video ads to go up this year because Facebook is still trying to figure out how to make them work without annoying its user base. The good news is that Facebook has apparently decided that the autoplay ads won’t have any sound unless users decide to click on them and flip the sound on, AllThingsD reports.

Quickoffice for Android gets an update adding better Drive integration

The Google Quickoffice app for Android has just had an update. The update now seamlessly switches into the Google Drive app if you open a file from your Drive. Which initially seems to me will limit my formatting options, as Drive doesn’t have as many options. I guess I just need to try it out a bit more.

 

The Quickoffice app is quite nice all in all, allowing you to create documents in the cloud or locally. It’s free also, which is also a bonus. Just head over to the link below or update or install it.
