Samsung Galaxy Ace 3 arriving in stores this weekend

We knew it was coming, but this weekend you can get the Galaxy Ace 3. It’s an updated version of the Ace 2, but with the addition of 4G. It’ll be in shops from October 5th with EE stores stocking it first. Carphone Warehouse and Tesco adding it to their shelves shortly after.

Inside it’s powered by Android Jellybean 4.2 and has a 5 megapixel camera with flash (plus a VGA shooter up front), 4.0? WVGA (480×800) screen, 1.2Ghz dual core CPU and a lot of the Samsung software you’ve seen on the higher-end Galaxy handsets, such as Readers, Game and Music Hub, Samsung Kies, ChatON, S Translator, S Travel, Smart Stay, S Voice and Easy Mode.

As usual there’s a 3.5mm audio port, WiFi, NFC, GPS, Bluetooth 4.0, 8GB Internal storage (of which 5GB is available to you), a microSD slot for an additional 64GB and 1GB of RAM.

Expect it to be fairly well priced considering the spec.

Sprint unsure of whether it will still carry BlackBerry phones in stores

10:00 PM

In a momentary reprieve from the gloom surrounding BlackBerry’s future, Sprint declared that it has not yet decided to stop carrying BlackBerry handsets. Sprint CFO Joe Euteneur said that Sprint will be taking a “wait-and-see” approach for whether or not it will continue to carry BlackBerry phones in its stores now that the handset vendor is shifting focus away from the consumer market. The carrier noted that business customers “have typically been the biggest fans of BlackBerry smartphones,” Reuters reports. This development comes right on the heels of T-Mobile’s confirmation that it will no longer carry BlackBerry products in its stores. Reuters also spoke with Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam who stated that, much like Sprint, his company’s decision “would depend on its customers’ wishes.”

Mobile app stores will hit 102 billion downloads this year

7:45 PM

The explosive growth of mobile apps isn’t showing any signs of slowing down. According to research company Gartner, 102 billion apps will be downloaded from mobile app stores in 2013, nearly 40 billion more downloads than 2012. Total revenue of app downloads is also expected to increase from $18 billion last year to $26 billion by the end of 2013. Although Gartner‘s projections show continuous growth through 2017, the rate of growth is expected to slow starting next year.

“We expect strong growth in downloads through 2014, but growth is forecast to slow down a bit in later years,” said Sandy Shen, research director at Gartner. “The average downloads per device should be high in early years as users get new devices and discover the apps they like. Over time they accumulate a portfolio of apps they like and stick to, so there will be moderate numbers of downloads in the later years.”

So it begins: iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c now available for purchase in stores

8:00 AM

Lines as long as the eye can see formed overnight outside Apple Stores in major metropolitan areas, which can only mean one thing: iPhone launch day is finally here in the U.S. Both of Apple’s new iPhone 5s went on sale in the middle of the night online, but those who want a flagship model or an iPhone 5c in hand this weekend have no choice but to battle the crowds and hit the stores. Odds are good that most people out there this morning will be looking to get their hands on a flagship iPhone 5s, and we hope black and space gray is the color combination of choice for most of them — other colors might be hard to come by at many stores. Best of luck to those brave souls who trekked out today in search of a 5s. To everyone else, it’s time to sit back and wait for the inevitable stories of sellouts, POS system failures, activation server failures and all the other chaos that comes with the debut of a new iPhone.
