Google finally release the Nexus 5

In what has possibly been the most drawn out build up to a phone being announced the LG made Google Nexus 5 has finally been announced.

Spec wise it’s pretty much as we expected. The full spec is as follows.

The Nexus 5 seems like it’s going to be the phone to own, for weeks people have been holding off getting one phone or another. Now the wait is over, you can finally decide just head over to the Play Store it is available from £299 for the 16GB and £339 for the 32GB.

Just in time for Halloween, we have two new treats for Android fans. First, we’re excited to unwrap our latest platform release, KitKat, which delivers a smarter, more immersive Android experience to even more people. And second, we’re introducing Nexus 5—a new Nexus phone developed with LG.

The first thing you’ll notice about KitKat is we’ve made the experience much more engaging: the book you’re reading, the game you’re playing, or the movie you’re watching—now all of these take center stage with the new immersive mode, which automatically hides everything except what you really want to see.

Bringing more Google smarts to Android
Behind the polish on the screen is the power under the hood. Take the Phone app, which for most people hasn’t really changed since the days of flip phones. Now, we’re making calling easier than ever, by helping you search across your contacts, nearby places, or even Google Apps accounts (like your company’s directory), directly from within the app. And with the new Hangouts app, all of your SMS and MMS messages are together in the same place, alongside your other conversations and video calls, so you’ll never miss a message no matter how your friends send it. This is just a small taste of KitKat—learn more on our site.

Google has always focused on helping users get immediate access to the information they need, and we want to bring this same convenience and power to users on Android. With the new Nexus 5 launcher, Google smarts are deeply integrated into the phone you carry around with you, so getting to the information you need is simple, easy and fast. Swipe once from the home screen to get Google Now literally at your fingertips. Put Google to work for you by saying “OK, Google” to launch voice search, send a text, get directions or even play a song you want to hear. And in the coming weeks, we’re enhancing Now with important new card types that bring you information about contextual topics that interest you such as updates from a favorite website or blog.

Reaching the next 1 billion users
Building a platform that makes mobile phones accessible for everyone has always been at the heart of Android. Until now, some lower-end Android phones couldn’t benefit from more recent Android releases due to memory constraints. With KitKat, we’ve slimmed down Android’s memory footprint by doing things like removing unnecessary background services and reducing the memory consumption of features that you use all the time. We did this not only within Android but across Google services like Chrome and YouTube. RAM (or memory) is one of the most expensive parts of a phone, and now Android can run comfortably on the 512MB of RAM devices that are popular in much of the world, bringing the latest goodies in Android 4.4 within reach for the next billion smartphone users.

Introducing Nexus 5
Along with our sweet naming tradition, we also introduce a new device with each platform release to showcase the latest Android innovations. For KitKat, we partnered with LG to develop Nexus 5 — the slimmest and fastest Nexus phone ever made. Its design is simple and refined to showcase the 5” Full HD display. Nexus 5 also keeps you connected at blazing speeds with 4G/LTE and ultra fast wifi. The advanced new lens on Nexus 5 captures more light for brighter night and sharper action shots. And with optical image stabilization, you no longer have to worry about shaky hands and blurry pictures. A new HDR+ mode automatically snaps a rapid burst of photos and combines them to give you the best possible single shot. Learn more on our site.

Nexus 5 is available today, unlocked and without a contract, on Google Play in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Australia, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Japan and Korea (and coming soon to India), starting at $349. Just in the time for the holidays, Nexus 5 will be available soon at the following retailers: Sprint, T-Mobile, Amazon, Best Buy and RadioShack.

Android 4.4, KitKat, which comes on Nexus 5, will also soon be available on Nexus 4, 7, 10, the Samsung Galaxy S4 and HTC One Google Play edition devices in the coming weeks.

How’s that for a treat?

Lenovo to release the A10 an Android powered laptop

Lenovo-A10

Lenovo have long skirted around the edge of the Android world, releasing the occasional smartphone with no real success. This time, however, they’re aiming at their core marketplace with the A10 android powered laptop.

This is another strange bit of toe-dangling though, because what is an android laptop if not a tablet with a keyboard attached. This niche has been dominated for years by the Asus Transformer series, who’s TF101 became an instant classic when it was released with its docking dual battery keyboard (despite it running Honeycomb!).

Here’s what we know of the spec list:

1.6GHz quad core Cortex A9 CPU2GB RAM32GB internal storagemicroSD card slot0.3MP front facing cameraStereo speakers10.1-inch HD flip over display with a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels and 10 point touch compatibilityAndroid 4.2

So what will the A10 offer that the latest Asus Transformer Pad TF701 won’t? Not a lot it seems until you get to the price – $250. At the current exchange rate that’s about £155 versus the TF701's expected tag of about £600.

Clearly this means Lenovo aren’t aiming to be a giant killer with the A10 then. But what they could take a chunk out of is the Chromebook customer base.

I’m a big fan of the Chromebooks, in fact I’m typing this article on a Samsung Series 5 right now, but the entry level models weigh in at around £200. With the Lenovo’s extra features and apps this would be a very tempting alternative.

Bai Peng, vice president and general manager, notebook business unit, Lenovo Business Group said,

Lenovo claims that the A10's battery support is up to nine hours of continuous video playback – which needs to be scrutinized under review. “With the recent explosive growth in Android-based, smart connected devices, customers are relying more on Android apps for both work and play. Why should they be required to switch and duplicate to use their laptop? Lenovo’s A10 brings ultra-portability and dual-mode benefits to Android users at a reasonable price. Thin and light, with multiple modes and user-inspired innovations for an outstanding user experience … the A10 is uniquely Lenovo.”

After the rumours of Lenovo buying HTC it’s good to see them already reinvesting in Android with an innovative and good value product.

AnTuTu release a new (non fraudulent) version of their benchmarking app

As part of my role here at Coolsmartphone I get a lot of devices to review and more often than not I’ll run some benchmark tests just to see how it compares to the competition. Recently we heard that manufacturers have been able to trick some benchmarking apps into giving a higher score.

The developers for popular benchmark app AnTuTu decided they wanted to do something about this and they’ve released a newer version of their app. Called AnTuTu X which supposedly stops manufacturers cheating. It hasn’t made a huge difference on my Note 3. See below.

Original AnTuTu

AnTuTu X

So we can see that the new app scores my Galaxy Note 3 slightly lower. Then what? How long before the new apps results can be faked?

The app description doesn’t really explain how it’s going to remain reliable either.

Description
A special edition of AnTuTu Benchmark to prevent fraud and cheating!
The X editor for the Ainol & Ramos device!!
AnTuTu Benchmark X Edition is free benchmarking app that helps users to know deeper to their Android devices, without fraud and cheating!

Samsung to release curved display on a smartphone

OLED (Organic LED) televisions with curved screens were first demonstated at CES in 2012 and the technology has hit the market this year for anyone with curved walls to buy.

Samsung have confirmed that they will be releasing a smartphone based on the same technology with a plastic curved OLED display.

Speaking at the recent Galaxy Note 3 event, DJ Lee, Samsung’s head of strategic marketing for mobile said:

“We plan to introduce a smartphone with a curved display in South Korea in October”

It is thought that the new curved smartphones will form part of Samsung’s Active range.

This could of course be the first step in the development of foldable or wearable smartphones and could well lead to a whole new generation of devices that are completely different in style to those that we currently use on a daily basis.

No more details have been revealed about this curvy smartphone and therefore it is a waiting game however you can be sure that as soon as more details are revealed we here at Coolsmartphone will bring them to you.

Facebook for iOS updated following release of iOS 7

The release of iOS 7 saw a whole new visual style for Apples devices.  This of course means that apps that previously fit in with the design styling now will need an update to fit in with the new styles.

One of the first third party apps to see an update is the official Facebook app which today sees a new release which has ”a new look designed with iOS 7 in mind.”

With Facebook 6.5, it’s now easier to navigate the app—you can quickly switch from News Feed to your friend requests, Messages or Notifications; just tap along the bottom of the screen.  You can also tap the “More tab” on the bottom right to see options like your Timeline, groups, events and more.  In addition, the app looks right at home within iOS 7 with new design elements including a translucent bar at the top of the app which will change dynamically as you scroll through different photos and posts.

The update will be available from the App store later today.

Nissan release a smartwatch too. Yes Nissan, and it’s rather good too.

I tell you what we need right now. Another smartwatch. Oh yes. How about a watch made by … a car company? Hehehe… yeah. I’ll bet that’ll be really tacky and cheap.

I bet it’ll just be a bad design with the car logo wedged on. Hang on, I’ve got a photo of it here somewhere, let me just open it up…

Oh.. oh wait. Aactually, it’s rather beautiful. I like it.

This is the Nissan Nismo Concept Watch and it’ll connect you to your Nissan Nismo car. Apparently Nismo is the performance / tuning side of Nissan. Hmm.. I’ve never heard of them personally but they’ve sent us a picture of the Nissan Juke Nismo version too..

Woaha.

OK. I’ve been proved wrong on both counts. So, what we have here now is a very nice looking watch and a rather sporty vehicle. The watch itself lets you monitor how efficient your Nismo is, including average speed and your MPG. Connect via Bluetooth and you’ll instantly access telematics and performance data, but it’s not all about your car. The watch also lets you capture biometric data via a heart data monitor, plus it’ll track and rate your “social media performance” on Twitter, Facebook and elsewhere via their “Social Speed” software.

The Nismo Watch will use a lithium battery and gets charged via micro-USB. Nissan reckon that you’ll get over seven days of use under normal usage conditions, which is very decent indeed. No pricing as yet, but you can bet it’ll be an extra if you buy the Nissan Juke Nismo. It’ll be available in black, white, plus black and red.

Simply put, this watch will look after you and let you keep in touch with your car. So, for the second time in less than a week, it’s a fantastic reason to post this image once more.

Nissan Enters Wearable Technology Space with the Unveil of the Nismo Watch Concept

Nissan launches first smartwatch to connect car and driver performance

· First smartwatch concept to connect driver and car
· Nismo Watch showcases Nissan’s intent to deliver biometric data that enhances driver performance and efficiency
· Nissan is investigating heart and brain monitoring technologies for future wearable tech

Rolle, Switzerland, 9th September, 2013 – Nissan will become the first car manufacturer to create a smartwatch designed specifically for drivers of Nissan Nismo cars. The Nissan Nismo Concept Watch will be the first smartwatch to connect a driver to the car and will provide drivers with real-time biometric data.

The watch, unveiled today ahead of its display at the Frankfurt Motor Show (10th – 22nd September 2013), is Nissan’s first step into wearable technology and epitomises its ‘fan first’ approach to performance.

The Nissan Nismo Watch will allow drivers to:

- monitor the efficiency of their vehicle with average speed and fuel consumption readings;

- access vehicle telematics and performance data while on track;

- capture biometric data via a heart rate monitor;

- connect to the car using a smartphone app via Bluetooth Low Energy;

- receive tailored car messages from Nissan;

Gareth Dunsmore, Marketing Communications General Manager, Nissan in Europe, commented: “Wearable technology is fast becoming the next big thing and we want to take advantage of this innovative technology to make our Nismo Brand more accessible. On track, Nissan uses the latest biometric training technologies to improve the performance of our Nissan Nismo Athletes and it is this technology we want to bring to our fans to enhance their driving experience and Nismo ownership.”

Earlier this year, Nissan launched the Nismo Lab – a bespoke, mobile laboratory that features the latest, advanced biometric training tools such as brainwave technology and JukeRide – a cutting-edge performance analysis tool, that captures live biometric and telematics data from the race cars and Nissan Nismo Athletes during races. Nismo’s vision is to take these digital age technologies and make them available to athletes from other disciplines and to Nissan owners through future wearable tech. Three key technologies have already identified for future development:

- ECG (Electrocardiogram) – to measure the intervals of the R-R rhythm of the heart, and identify early fatigue;

- EEG (Electroencephalogram) Brainwave – to monitor the drivers’ levels of concentration and emotions, and help athletes to get ‘In The Zone’;

- Skin Temperature – to record core body temperature and hydration levels;

The Nismo Watch will also track and rate the user’s social performance across Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest and Instagram via Nissan’s proprietary Social Speed software.

The sleek Nismo Watch will be available in three colours – black, white and the flagship black and red. The watch design was inspired by the Nismo ring and is reflected in a seamless, futuristic and ergonomic design. The simple user interface can be controlled by two buttons and is secured onto the driver’s wrist via a simple snap-fit mechanism.

Even the packaging will have a unique n Nismo identity.

Dunsmore concluded: “We have brought the Nismo experience to life in every aspect of the watch, including its packaging, which will be made using tyres and rubber from the racetrack. As Nismo is the performance arm of Nissan, we wanted a way of integrating Nismo’s heritage in racing into this futuristic innovation.”

The Nismo Watch will use a lithium battery and will be charged by micro-USB, with a battery life of over seven days under normal usage conditions.
